The Sound Yard, an impressive interactive light and sound installation located on the Maritime Mile in Belfast, Maritime Mile in Belfast, Maritime Mile in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The completed installation stands 6 metres high and spans 9.6 metres in width. The sculpture is composed of more than 500 suspended metal rods arranged in circular rings and hung from a steel support structure.
Its outer veil is formed from reflective metal rods that create both an acoustic buffer and a visual mirage, while the inner veil consists of suspended sound tubes. Motion sensors allow visitors to activate a motorised system of steel hammers, which strike the hollow tubes to recreate the resonant metallic sounds once synonymous with the surrounding shipyards. The installation evokes the industrial heritage of the area, immersing visitors in the nostalgic soundscape of shipbuilding and metalwork.
